December 3, 2011
The Lodge awarded Officer of the Year honors to Officer Nick
McCarthy of the Colerain Township Police Department.
Officer McCarthy spear-headed the creation of
the Colerain Police Department’s Child and Resident’s Encounter
program, also known as C.A.R.E.
The first of its kind program is aimed
at helping officers gather information about those in the community
with special needs.

PO Joe Willig of Harrison PD received the 2011 award for Member of the Year. Congratulations Joe, and thanks for all of your hard work for the Lodge.

On September 10, 2011 a member of our Legislative Committee
participated in a teleconferenced meeting with Rep. Steve Chabot, and raised the
issue of
H.R. 1332, the "Social Security Fairness Act" which seeks to repeal the
provisions in the Social Security system that penalize police retirees by
cutting their Social Security Benefits by up to 60%.
Representative Chabot has not co-sponsored this bill, which is
strongly supported by the FOP, in the current session. On 9/12/11, our
committee member was contacted by a member of Mr. Chabot's staff, who stated
that he supported the bill in previous sessions, and his lack of sponsorship is
likely an oversight.

2007 Officer of the Year
The Lodge awarded Officer of the Year honors to Officer Jamie L. Penley of the Colerain Township Police Dept.
On July 27th 2007 Officer Penley was dispatched to a report of a missing person. It was reported that a 44 year old female had not been seen for over two days. Officer Penley's investigation revealed that the victim was last seen leaving a local bar in Colerain Twp. with an intoxicated male subject.
Officer Penley was later able to locate the victim's vehicle parked, abandoned in front of a local address. Officer Penley began to check around the residence when he heard a female inside screaming and crying for help. Officer Penley took quick action and forced entry into the home. The victim was found curled up in the fetal position in a back bedroom. A male subject was located in the residence as well. He was found to be armed with a large butcher knife. The suspect was disarmed without incident.
It was discovered that the victim had been taken against her will and forced to withdraw money from an ATM. The victim was then held in the suspect's residence for two days while he raped her numerous times.
Due to Officer Penley's diligence and quick response, he was able to rescue the victim from a dire situation and disarm the suspect without incident.
He was submitted for this award by Sgt. Jerry Grayson, Colerain Twp. Police Dept.
